Cascada Los Comales

6.5 / 10Open4.6(327)

Los Comales is Xilitla's refresh button: a wide, low curtain of warm, crystalline water stepping into a chain of shallow pools, twenty minutes' walk through garden paths dotted with sculptures. It is small and knows it — a compact park with bathrooms, palapas and picnic space where you can bring your own food and drinks (rare in the region), pay once, and stay the whole day. Locals treat it as the perfect cooldown after the Edward James garden, and weekday afternoons you can have the pools entirely to yourself. The caveat is hydrological: in dry months the falls thin to a ribbon, so time it after rains.

Getting there without a car

A short drive from Xilitla center — combine it with your Las Pozas visit, as most visitors do. Without a car, a taxi from Xilitla plaza runs 10–15 minutes; agree on a return pickup since transport is scarce at the gate. The walk from the entrance to the falls is under 20 minutes on an easy path.

What to bring

Swimsuit on, water shoes for the rocky pool bottoms, and a picnic — outside food and drinks are allowed, which makes this the region's easiest family lunch stop. Entry has run $75–100 MXN for unlimited time. Cash only.

Rainy season & safety

This is a falls where rain season (June–October) is the good season: several reviewers note the water narrows to a trickle in dry months and the park loses its magic. After rains the pools fill with the warm, clear water it is known for.

Good to know

  • Go weekday afternoon like the locals: one reviewer had the whole place alone at 4 pm.
  • Pair it with the sculpture garden the same morning — the classic Xilitla double.
  • If the falls look thin on arrival, ask before paying; the flow genuinely varies week to week.
