Cascadas de Micos (Pago Pago)
Micos (Pago Pago) is the Huasteca on training wheels — and that is a compliment. Seven staircase waterfalls on the outskirts of Ciudad Valles where the party is in the water: swimming right up to the curtain of each fall, tubing down the current, and for the brave, guided jumps from ledges the operators have measured for decades. Because it sits 15 minutes from the city, Micos is where locals actually spend their Sundays, which tells you everything: cheap, fun, zero pretension. Water shoes vendors, taco stands and lockers line the entrance. It is the best "first waterfall" in the region — if Micos hooks you, the rest of the Huasteca awaits.

Closest major sight to Ciudad Valles: a 15-minute taxi or colectivo ride northwest of the city center — any driver knows "Micos" or "Pago Pago". No car needed at all, which makes it the easiest half-day in the region. Tubing and jumping tours are hired at the entrance; life jackets are mandatory and included.
Full transport guide on huastecapotosina.org ↗What to bring
Swimsuit already on, water shoes (rocky bottom), a dry shirt for after, cash for entry and tubes, and a phone pouch if you want photos from the water. Entry (~$100 MXN) includes the life vest; bathrooms, post-swim showers and simple food stands sit at the entrance — no cards anywhere.
Rainy season & safety
After big storms the river swells and the jumping platforms close while swimming areas shrink — check the status above. In the dry season (April–May) the flow drops but pools stay deep and clear.
When to go, month by month on huastecapotosina.org ↗Good to know
- Rent the tube and do the full run; walk back along the path and jump in again.
- The big top-fall jumps now require a certified guide — recent visitors report unguided access to the highest ledge is closed. Hire the local guides anyway: they read the currents and carry the photos.
- Come on a weekday morning to have the pools nearly alone; Sundays are a family party — busy but, per reviewers, it absorbs crowds better than any other site in the region.
- Micos is your warm-up: book Tamul by boat for the next morning and you have the classic 24 hours of the Huasteca.
- Families rate the water temperature the friendliest in the region — warm enough that kids stay in for hours, unlike the colder pools of Minas Viejas or Puente de Dios.
