Cascada de El Aguacate

7.0 / 10Open4.7

El Aguacate is Tamasopo's quiet sibling to its famous falls: a tall, narrow cascade dropping into a deep jade pool on ejido land, reached by a short trail, with a fraction of the visitors that Puente de Dios and Minas Viejas receive. The ejido runs it simply — an entry fee, mandatory life vests, ropes marking the swim area — and the reward is water of the deep, glassy kind that photographs like a screensaver. For travelers doing the Tamasopo circuit by car, it is the third stop that most skip and locals recommend.

Getting there without a car

In the El Aguacate settlement outside Tamasopo, roughly 30 minutes from town by car on roads that narrow near the end. Without a car this is a tour-or-taxi destination: rural taxis from Tamasopo will run you out and back if you fix the pickup. Entry is $90 MXN with the vest mandatory, and posted hours run 8 am to 6 pm.

What to bring

Water shoes, dry bag, cash — and the vest is non-negotiable: the pool is deep and the ejido enforces jackets for every swimmer. Food is best brought in; services are minimal.

Rainy season & safety

Rains swell the stream and the trail turns slick; the listing itself puts the best season at November to March, when the water runs transparent. After storms, ask at the gate whether swimming is open before paying.

Good to know

  • Do the Tamasopo trio in one day: Minas Viejas morning, Puente de Dios midday, El Aguacate for the empty-pool sunset slot.
  • Weekday visits can mean having the pool to yours alone — reviewers of nearby falls confirm the pattern.
  • Wear the vest even if you swim well; the deep section is colder than it looks.
