El Meco y El Chalán

7.0 / 10Open4.5

El Meco is the adventure site for people who have done the classics: a powerful single-drop fall where the Río Meco folds over a smooth rock lip into a deep canyon pool, surrounded by some of the least-developed riverbank in the region. The water is cold, fast and glassy green; the reward is the swim across to the curtain itself and the roar that fills the little amphitheater of rock. A small community eco-park at the entrance handles fees, palapas and guides. It takes effort to reach — a rough road and a steep approach — which is exactly why the pool still belongs to the birds and the occasional family from El Naranjo rather than the tour buses.

Getting there without a car

On the back road between Tamasopo and El Naranjo. Without a car this is genuinely hard: colectivo to El Naranjo or Tamasopo, then a rural taxi for the final dirt stretch — agree on a return hour. With a car, high clearance is useful after rain but usually not required; parking is beside the eco-park.

What to bring

Water shoes and real swimming confidence — the pool has current near the falls — a dry bag, picnic supplies (nothing sells at the pool itself), and cash for the community fee. Cell signal is weak; tell someone where you are going.

Rainy season & safety

The Meco river rises violently and fast; the site closes at the first sign of brown water upstream and stays closed for days. In the dry months the flow thins to a graceful single ribbon and the pool turns swimmable and calm.

Good to know

  • Weekdays you will likely have the entire canyon to yourself — this is the site locals recommend when they want quiet.
  • Pair it with Minas Viejas or El Salto del Agua for a self-drive day without tour buses.
  • Bring your trash out — the community keeps this place immaculate and charges accordingly little.
