Ex Convento de San Agustín

6.0 / 10Open4.4(161)

Before Edward James, Xilitla's monument was this: a 16th-century Augustinian convent on the main plaza, begun in 1553 — the oldest conventual complex in San Luis Potosí, built Plateresque-style and fortified, because evangelizing the Huasteca frontier meant withstanding attacks. Today it is a small, well-kept museum of religious art and regional history that most visitors walk in ten minutes and locals treat as the town's living room. It costs little or nothing, sits steps from the plaza's cafes, and gives the pueblo mágico the historical spine that the sculpture garden lacks.

Getting there without a car

On Xilitla's main plaza (Miguel Hidalgo 201) — if you are anywhere in town center, you walk to it. Colectivos from Ciudad Valles drop you in the center; it is the first thing you see on arrival.

What to bring

Nothing but curiosity and maybe a hat for the plaza. Modest dress if a service is on, small cash for the museum donation, and time for the murals and courtyard — the visit is short but the plaza invites a coffee after.

Rainy season & safety

Xilitla rains are brief and the convent is the town's best downpour shelter — the courtyard museum stays visitable under cloud and drizzle, arguably at its moodiest.

Good to know

  • Do it before Las Pozas: the museum context makes the garden's story land harder.
  • Come at golden hour — the facade photographs beautifully against the plaza.
  • The plaza around it is the best cheap-eat zone in Xilitla; plan lunch here.
