Parque Recreativo Municipal (El Naranjo)

5.0 / 10Open4.7

El Naranjo's municipal park is where the "ruta turquesa" earns its name for free: a stretch of gentle, blue-green river with small cascades running through town, open to everyone, with local operators renting vests, inflables and kayaks along the bank and food stands a step away. There is no ticket booth theatrics — it is the town's river, swum by its kids after school. The current is real but mild, the water stays clear, and the surrounding hotels make it an easy overnight base for Micos, El Salto and El Meco without ever driving to swim.

Getting there without a car

In El Naranjo town itself (Av. Benito Juárez) — walkable from the center and the hotels. About 1.5 hours from Ciudad Valles by car, or by direct bus to El Naranjo. Parking exists but shrinks fast in high season; arriving early solves both parking and crowds.

What to bring

A rented vest even if you swim well — locals skip them, visitors don't (sections are deeper than they look). Water shoes, cash for the vendors, and patience for weekends: reviewers describe the park filling from about 1 pm.

Rainy season & safety

After heavy rain the river muddies and the current sharpens — that is the signal to wait it out. The dry-season river is the calm, clear water the town is proud of, and mornings before the heat are its best hour.

Good to know

  • Arrive before noon: reviewers consistently describe solitude until about 1 pm and families after.
  • This is the best free swim on the turquoise route — budget the saved entry fee for the El Meco boat.
  • Carry your trash out; visitors' litter is the locals' one recurring grievance here.
