Selva Teenek is the Huasteca's wildlife sanctuary angle: a UMAs-run refuge on the edge of Ciudad Valles where rescued felines — jaguars, ocelots, jaguarundis — live in forest enclosures, visited by guided tour only. The experience is conservation-first rather than zoo-first: guides explain the Teenek cosmology around animals, the rescue stories, and why most residents can never be released. At $70 MXN and 20 minutes from downtown, it is the rare family stop that entertains kids and actually funds something — and the counterweight to a trip made entirely of waterfalls.

Getting there without a car
On Blvd. México–Laredo on Valles' outskirts — about 8 km from downtown, a 15-minute taxi or drive. Open Thursday to Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm; guided visits run through the day, no self-guided wandering.

Rainy season & safety
