Sótano de las Huahuas (Área Natural Protegida)

6.5 / 10Open4.8

The Huahuas pit is the Golondrinas's smaller, wilder sibling — a 478-meter shaft in the Aquismón highlands where thousands of green parakeets erupt at dawn in a spiral of wings and screaming. Because the pit is narrower, the birds rise tighter and closer, and the rim viewpoint puts you almost over the vortex. There is no rappelling circus here, no facilities to speak of: a thatched shelter, a dirt road through coffee and orange groves, and one of the great natural alarms clocks in the world. The exodus peaks at first light — 5:30 to 7 am — then the pit sits silent all day, a hole so deep the walls turn blue with distance.

Getting there without a car

From Ciudad Valles, bus or colectivo to Aquismón (about 1.5 hours), then a rural taxi of 20–30 minutes on a rough dirt road — arrange the pickup time in advance, as drivers wait at the Aquismón market at dawn. With a car, any sedan manages the road slowly; after rain, high clearance helps. The viewpoint is a 5-minute walk from parking.

What to bring

Warm layers — this is 900 meters of altitude and the dawn is cold — a thermos, binoculars or a long lens, and cash for the ejido fee. There is no food or signal at the site: bring breakfast and download offline maps.

Rainy season & safety

Rain or fog cancels the show — parakeets do not fly up into clouds, and the rim trail gets slippery. Dry season dawns (November–April) are the reliable window; in the wet months, check the sky in Aquismón before committing the drive.

Good to know

  • Same-morning doubleheader: Huahuas at dawn, then Golondrinas 30 minutes away — the birds stagger nicely.
  • Aquismón town has simple posadas; sleeping there beats a 4:30 am start from Valles.
  • Stay at the rim until 8 am: the last stragglers and the echo of the empty pit are worth the cold.
