Sótano del Cepillo
The Sótano del Cepillo is Aquismón's third great sinkhole — the less-visited sibling of the Golondrinas and the Huahuas, where the earth simply opens into a forested pit and the visit is yours almost alone. There are no dawn bird cyclones here (that is Golondrinas' show) and no fancy railing infrastructure: the sotano is a hiking and caving area where local guides walk you down to look up at walls of vertical jungle. For travelers who loved the big two and want one more, quieter descent, this is the connoisseur's option — raw, green and uncrowded.

Open in Google Maps ↗Getting there without a car
In Aquismón's high country, on rural roads best driven dry — from Aquismón town by car or negotiated rural taxi, with the community fee paid at the site. Open roughly 8 am to 5 pm; a local guide is the expected and genuinely necessary way in.
Full transport guide on huastecapotosina.org ↗What to bring
The one written requirement says it all: grippy shoes, non-negotiable — the descent trails stay damp. Add a headlamp if you go cave-ward, a layer for the pit's cool air, cash for the guide, and offline maps for the approach.
Rainy season & safety
Rain makes the descent slippery and the pit misty — beautiful, hazardous. Do it in the dry-season window (December–May) when trails hold and the morning light reaches deepest into the sink.
When to go, month by month on huastecapotosina.org ↗Good to know
- Take the local guide even if you usually skip them — route-finding inside is not optional.
- Morning visits get the light column and the birds; afternoons get you silence.
- Sequence it Huahuas → Cepillo in one day: spectacle first, immersion second.
